Speeding up Rider on Windows

Recommended system software adjustments

  • Use a Windows version currently supported by Microsoft
  • Keep Windows updated
  • Add the rider64.exe, JetBrains.ReSharper.Host64.exe, msbuild.exe, your project/solution folders, and ReSharper cache folder (by default %HomePath%\.Rider<version>\system\resharper-host\local\Transient) to the ignore list of Windows Defender (and other antivirus software).
  • Stop unnecessary services and processes
  • Exclude your project/solution folders and ReSharper cache folder from Windows indexing

  1. Default paths to exes listed above would be helpful
  2. I found 2 instances of msbuild.exe - should both be excluded?
  • %HomePath%\AppData\Local\JetBrains\BuildTools\MSBuild\15.0\Bin\msbuild.exe
  • %HomePath%\AppData\Local\JetBrains\Toolbox\apps\Rider\ch-0\191.7141.355\tools\MSBuild\15.0\Bin\msbuild.exe

Update: installation paths

These are generic recommendations to speed up any application. Besides that, by giving these recommendations, you blame everything but Rider for starting up slowly. A bit disappointing, to be honest.

So you say that every time new Rider/Visual Studio version is installed I should go and add an exception to the ignore list? Why all the games, MS Office and other apps are starting fast on my PC, except Rider?

«Stop unnecessary services and processes», — great advice. How should one decide whether a service or a process is unnecessary? Or what if all of them are needed?

Startup times in Rider are HIGLY impacted by the Andtivirus compared to other applications.

While starting Rider, my Windows Defender (win 10) went crazy on CPU. Disabling the Rider & Resharper process + folders had cut in half the startup time.
