How to keep find window open and have it work properly?

IMO it is soooo annoying to have the find window disappear as soon as you click away from it.   I've been using the pushpin icon to keep it open, but I find that then the window doesn't work properly.  With it pinned, hitting CTRL-SHIFT-F doesn't let me do a new search.  It either does nothing or starts putting my text in the target search box.  I have to manually click in the search bar at the top. 

Anyone know how to get this working where I can keep the Find window open and still be able to use CTRL-SHIFT-F without clicking every time in the search bar at  the top?  I can't believe this behavior is not supported.  Usually when I am searching in files I want to be able to see (and keep seeing) the list of things with my results.  That's a very common thing to need to do!
