Vertical tabs take up too much space when editor is split - any solutions?

I like vertical tabs by default, but when the editor is split the 2nd set of vertical tabs take up too much space. 

It would be great if there was a way to turn on horizontal tabs for the 2nd editor pane, or automatically turn on horizontal tabs overall when the editor is split. 

Visual Studio also has the ability to show 1 set of vertical tabs, but label each tab by panel 1 or panel 2. 

Anyone know how to do one of these or another solution I haven't thought of? Thanks
