Rename variable

I'm trying to figure out how to get the rename refactor tool to not select the variable name when I'm trying to refactor. I only ever want to insert or delete like a letter or something, and the IDE preselecting the whole variable always messes me up.

The documentation says to uncheck "Preselect current symbol name for Rename refactoring"

But that does not work. I'm thinking it's because a inlay-popup lists suggestions. I can't find anywhere in settings or the internet on how to disable these rename suggestions.

Is there a way to disable rename suggestions?
Or is there a way to get the unchecked preselect option working?
