Keep bar icons always on

How can I keep the icons on the right size always on? They disappear as soon as I move the mouse away. I want them always on because I can click quickly on an icon and I don't have to hover first and then click on the icon. It is very annoying.

And a more philosophical question. Why do you copy the UI design that Microsoft comes up with? This style of hiding icons and have them appear only when you hover on a specific region is very annoying because sometimes you don't even know that certain empty space might have icons until you move the mouse there.

Thanks!

To turn this feature off:

  • Go to Settings | Advanced Settings
  • Check “Always show tool window header icons”

As for the philosophical question, I must say that the UI primary goal is to be as intuitive as possible. We ran UI researches, and it appears that our research ended up with the same conclusion as Microsoft's.

Please try “Many islands” visual theme for a new JetBrains IDE look.
Note: in non-EAP versions, this theme is hidden under a registry flag, you can bring it back as follows:
– Invoke Find action with Cmd+Shift+A – or Shift-Shift and tab to Actions.
– Type «Registry» in the search field and press Enter with the corresponding action selected.
– Find the idea.islands.enabled key in the Registry window (you can start typing the key name to filter it out) and enable it.
– Press OK and restart the IDE.

Thank you so much for the tip. I changed this setting in all my JB IDEs.

As far as my philosophical question - and thank you for addressing it ! - I am glad to see that JB has done the  research and I am also glad that JB didn't adopt the ribbon toolbars that Microsoft came up with. I have to admit I am a creature of habit and when something works well I stick to it for a long time. I will give the new UI a try later when it becomes mainstream.

Thanks again!

Hi Nadia Tarashkevich - I have been using the new theme in one of the IDEs, I must say that I am not a fan of the rounded corners.

At the end of the day, imho, the IDE is not a web page. The gradient on the left side of the top corner is also annoying. Once again, the IDE is not a web page.

I have to say, overall, it looks slick.

You can right-click on the main toolbar and uncheck “Show project gradient”

Hope that helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
