Restore terminal tabs on IDE restart

Each time I upgrade WebStorm it resets my terminal window tabs. Again and again I have to recreate my tabs, while naming each and typing the specific shell comand. E.g. I use tabs: test, build, lint, coverage

It would be nice to restore each tab with its name, working directory and last executed command.

this is more of an issue now with AI CLIs such as Copilot CLI or Claude Code. I usually have a bunch of sessions that are moved to the main IDE area (which is nice that it's possible to move terminals to the editor tabs), and there are currently two productivity issues on restarts:

  • the state of the terminal tabs being moved to the editor (and maybe being pinned too) is not preserved across restarts.
  • the sessions are not resumed automatically. I mean of course it's a process that was killed and resuming the session would mean treating such CLIs as special case, but I think it has become such a common use case, that might be worth treating as a special case ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hi,

This is a known issue we are working on listed here:
1. Pinned or editor-moved terminal placement across restart: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IJPL-107495, fixed in the first 2026.3 EAP build, planned for 2026.3. This covers the first point in the follow-up comment.
2. Resume an AI CLI session (Claude Code, Codex, Copilot CLI) after restart: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IJPL-242784.

For agentic coding you can also try AIR inside 2026.3.
