Automatic/seamless install updates

Answered

Hi there!

It's somewhat annoying in Unity having to reset my external scripting tool each time, because Rider wants to install in a new directory each version. It would be great if when Rider had an update, it could handle it all itself and restart after upgrading. Is this planned?

Otherwise, will it cause issues if I simply install all new versions in Program Files/Jetbrains/Rider 2017? (I don't want to lose settings etc.)

Thanks!

Hi!
What happens if you
1. remove old version
2. install a new one
3. try to open script from Unity
There is logic in Unity3dRider to redetect Rider and set it as external editor for this case.

Hi Ivan,

Oh ok, so I should uninstall the old Rider first, and it should handle the Unity side of it manually? The other effect is having an ever increasing number of Rider directories within JetBrains/. (I can obviously delete these myself, but it'd be great if updating was a bit more automatic.)

For example, the prompt in Rider when an update is available sends you to the website to then press the download button. (The download itself could be automated?) Additionally, the prompt remains open in Rider, so you have to choose one of the other options as well as having chosen 'Download'.

I would love if 'Download' handled uninstalling and reinstalling entirely by itself, but failing that it could remind me to uninstall this version before installing the new version (and close the prompt when you press 'Download' and it opens your browser? Hehe).

We have a great app for getting seamless updates https://www.jetbrains.com/toolbox/app/
Please try it and follow up.
If you don't have JB account - there is Skip logging link or something like that.

Oh, perfect, similar to the Creative Cloud application, I didn't know about this!

kind of wish I didn't have to have these applications open to keep the single program I use up to date, but it's a good solution to my issue nonetheless!

Thanks Ivan!

Sure, we are aware of an update from 2017.1 to 2017.1.1 usability issue without toolbox, hope to solve it in future.
Also one thing we added in 2017.1.1 for Unity integration is a easy way to switch between Rider versions in Unity, if you have several version installed.
