Git settings repository no longer accessible, intentional?

Hi everyone,

I noticed that in Rider 2026, the menu entries for the settings repository are gone, while the plugin still exists. The plugin has been unsupported for a while now, however, its description says that it still works. Without the menu entry I can't use it though. Is that a bug or intentional? Either way, it's confusing.

Thanks for contacting Rider support. To help us better understand the issue, could you please provide us with a screenshot of the “settings repository”? Are you referring to a feature from a plugin? If so, please share the plugin name or link so we can follow up accordingly.

I am refering to this plugin. https://www.jetbrains.com/help/idea/settings-tools-settings-repository.html

“On the computer where the IntelliJ IDEA instance whose settings you want to share is installed, select File | Manage IDE Settings | Settings Repository from the main menu.”

That is the menu entry I am refering to.

Note that while I quote from the IntelliJ documentation, this plugin is available and installed in my installation of Rider 2026.

Nothing removed the menu entries deliberately. The Settings Repository plugin is deprecated and Backup and Sync replaces it, but it still ships builds for 2026.2 and 2026.3, and it still registers **Settings Repository...** and the **Sync with Settings Repository** group into **File | Manage IDE Settings**. I checked this in the plugin sources rather than on a Rider install, so I would like to see your setup before calling it a bug.

Two rules can empty parts of that submenu on their own, and both are expected:

- **Merge**, **Overwrite Local** and **Overwrite Remote** stay hidden until you configure a repository that has an upstream. Their parent group disappears with them, so on a fresh install you see nothing of it.
- **Settings Repository...** is disabled while Backup and Sync is switched on, because Backup and Sync takes exclusive control of the settings storage. It is still listed in the main menu in that state, only greyed out.

So a greyed-out entry is the design. An entry that is absent from **File | Manage IDE Settings** altogether is not, and that is what I want to check.

Could you send me four things:

1) The full Rider build number, the RD-... line in the About dialog.
2) The installed version of the Settings Repository plugin, from the Plugins page in Settings.
3) A screenshot of the **File | Manage IDE Settings** submenu while it is open.
4) Whether Backup and Sync is enabled in that IDE.

Backup and Sync also does not cover everything Settings Repository does. It syncs your own settings across your own machines, and it has no option to point it at a Git repository you choose. That second gap is tracked in [IDEA-318537](https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-318537), which is worth a vote if it matters to you.

Here's the info you requested. I've never seen a greyed out entry.

1. #RD-262.10968.135, built on September 24, 2026

2. 262.8665.173

3.

4. It was deactivated with the plugin activated. I tried deactivating the plugin, that didn't change anything.

The funny thing is that the Settings Repository plugin seems to work. I can see commits in the repository even though I can't even tell it's on.

I voted on the issue you suggested, thanks. I do have to agree with the commenters though that it is a bit weird of Jetbrains to ask people to vote on a feature that was previously available but has been deprecated (though apparently not removed).

Thanks for the screenshot and the build number. They show that this is a bug in Rider, not a removal. My earlier guess about a greyed-out entry does not apply here.

Rider replaces the **File | Manage IDE Settings** submenu with its own fixed list of items. That list drops every entry that another component adds, which is why **Backup and Sync…** is also missing from your screenshot. I reproduced this on Rider 2026.2.3 (RD-262.10968.135) with Settings Repository 262.8665.173, and on Rider 2026.3 EAP 4 (RD-263.5701.40). The plugin itself loads and works, so it keeps committing to your repository. Only its menu entries are lost.

The bug is tracked in [RIDER-139669](https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/RIDER-139669). To get notified when it is fixed, follow the issue as described in [Watching YouTrack issues](https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/207241135).

Until then, open **Help | Find Action** and type "Settings Repository" to reach the **Settings Repository…** action. The **Merge**, **Overwrite Local** and **Overwrite Remote** actions are available from the same search when your repository has a remote. The repository configuration itself is in **Settings | Tools | Settings Repository**.

Thank you, that helps! Good to know the functionality is still working and accessible.
