How to include files into Solution automatically?

Answered

Hello, I was wondering if there is a way to have Rider include files into the Solution automatically? Currently whenever I add a file such as an image, I have to right click the file and select "Include" to add it to the Solution. I would prefer this is done automatically but I have not found a way to do that. is this possible in Rider? Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Hello, could you please specify how exactly you add the files step by step? Thank you in advance!

Hi Olga Diakonova, how I normally add items to a project is by right clicking the folder I want to add my items to and then selecting "Add existing item" and selecting the items from the file explorer on my machine. Then once the items are added I switch views from Solution to File System then right click the added items and click Include to add the references to the Solution. I was hoping there is a way to have the files included automatically once I add them and this is just user error on my part.

Ozymandias, maybe you can show me a screen recording? I tried using righ-click on the project and choosing Add existing item, then I see 3 options: to add link to file, copy or move it, in all the cases the file is included automatically to the solution.

Olga Diakonova so I tried recording a video but the internal menus in Rider don't seem to be visible during recording; I did however take a screen shot of the menu that shows up. This is the menu I see when I right click a directory inside of a project folder and try to add a file. In this example I am attempting to add an image file and the only option I am given is "Add existing item" which then opens the file explorer on my machine. Once a file is added I then have to manually switch from Solution file view to File System view in Rider, find the file, then right click it and click Include.

Now if I right click the project directory itself I see more options in the Rider menu (Add existing item, Add reference and Add web reference). However what I need to do in this case is add a file to a directory inside of a project, not to the project root directory itself.

Ozymandias, I was speaking about this, if you right-click on the folder where you want to put your file, then click Add existing item, then you see the following options:

If it does not work, could you please clarify what Rider version are you using?

Olga Diakonova when following the steps you provided I do get that menu after I select the file I want to add. I think that is where I was confused. Once the menu in your screenshot shows up and I select Move the file is added to the Solution and appears in the .csproj file. I think I'm all set, thanks!
