FYI, re the code above, _settings.SerialPort is just a string variable loaded from a config file or selected from a dropdown.

It works if run with sudo. There is something weird about the way rider executes - does the run or debug process run as a different user? If so that would explain the issue with permissions. I can'...

Should have added, OS is Kubuntu 24.10, and that the same behaviour happens on two *very* different machines with the same OS.
