Rider on Windows won't start after update (thinks installer is still running)

A Rider update failed part way through, and now every time I try to start Rider, it refuses to start up with the error:

“An update is currently being installed on your computer. Please do not try to start Rider64.exe”

I've uninstalled and resintalled, restarted etc about 5 times but nothing changes. I'm assuming Rider puts a lock file somewhere and I need to delete it.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

This is currently affecting me as well. I've had to start working in Visual Studio since today, as I can't open Rider anymore…

Could you check if any Windows update-related processes are running on the affected system at the time when you are encountering this issue? You might see activity related to wuauclt, wusa or msiexec processes, depending on what exactly happens in your environment.

If you do, please consider rebooting the affected system and checking if the issue persists. If the issue is still reproducible, please try reinstalling Rider.
