1) Icon on a tab does not represent process state. For example, if the tab is not active and exception was thrown, I will not see it untill I switch to that tab. And there is no indication that it happened.
2) Breakpoints, on other hand, switch tabs on hit. I think, it would be nice to have an option to make behaviour on exception and on breakpoint hit consistent. (Switch Tab / Just Indicate)

Thank you for your feedback. At the current moment, you should be able to see if the session is active or stopped with a little green dot, please take a look at the screenshot attached.
There is also a known issue with focusing on the tab which threw an exception, it should be fixed in the upcoming version 193: RIDER-30769.
