Rider 2019.2(.1) fails to initialize and open solutions

Without having changed anything about my environment, Rider suddenly shows the following symptoms:

1. On launch, the colorful launch screen never closes, the white progress bar does not reach right edge. The following error dialog is shown:

Error Loading Default Project
Fatal error initializing 'com.jetbrains.rider.projectView.indexing.contentModel.ContentModelUserStore'

2. After dismissing the first dialog, a second error dialog appears (I had a solution open when Rider last worked correctly):

Error loading solution
com.intellij.ide.plugins.MainRunner$StartupAbortedException:
Fatal error initializing
'com.jetbrains.rider.diagnostics.RiderDiagnosticsHost'

3. When trying to open a solution manually, I see a third error dialog:

Error Loading Default Project
Fatal error initializing
'com.jetbrains.rider.diagnostics.RiderDiagnosticsHost'

I have already re-installed Rider to no avail. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

I am very sorry to hear you have faced such issues. Could you please provide me with a bit more details about your system and collect the logs using the instruction and attach them here, so we could take a closer look at what is going on. Thank you in advance!

I fixed this by deleting all preferences and configuration files. Sorry for not collecting the logs beforehand. If it happens again, I will do that.

Hi Olga,

I am seeing the same problem Developer reported above. Identical symptoms, and an uninstall and reinstall of Rider has not helped. I'm going to delete the preferences and config files as Developer suggests, so I can use my IDE, but I've got the log files to help you debug the problem. Where do I upload them?

Developer's workaround worked for me as well:

  1. Export the Rider settings to file
  2. Close Rider
  3. Rename the \.Rider2019.2\config folder to force it to be recreated
  4. Restart Rider and import the exported settings

Same issue, can't launch rider anymore.
Not even the standalone IDE.

Fixed by rebooting PC, so this might be a file that remains locked.
